Eames Century Modern Type Specimen

As a study of the Eames Century Modern typeface designed by House Industries, the typeface itself is an living specimen of the life’s work of Charles and Ray Eames, mid-century designers whose legendary architecture and furniture designs exist timelessly.

My designs evolved from influences drawn from the book Eames: Beautiful Details by Demetrios Eames as well as the designs by the Eames’, from the prestigious furniture to playful architectural pieces. Nearly the entirety of the book is created using type and basic shape. Abstracted glyphs created patterns such as the large-scaled period used in the title sequence or the embellishments created by House Industries as containing shapes.

Due to the nature of Charles and Ray Eames’ work I wanted to give equal focus to both the more serious and sleek tone that the couple’s work took on that juxtaposed with the often loud and playful nature their work displayed. By mixing both styles I created a conglomeration design specimen that displays sophisticated design alongside punchy, jolly ones.
